KUALA LUMPUR, 2 JULY – Chery Malaysia is set to deepen its integration into the Malaysian economy with ambitious plans from establishing a local production facility to introducing research and development centres in the country.
During a recent visit to Malaysia, Zhang Guibing, President of Chery International, confirmed the company’s intentions to potentially make Malaysia its right-hand drive hub.
“While China operates with left-hand drive vehicles, Malaysia offers a unique opportunity to serve right-hand drive markets.
“We are very interested in expanding our business here and Malaysia could be our right-hand drive hub,” Zhang said who was in the country to launch Chery Corporate Malaysia plant in Shah Alam, Selangor recently.
Chery plans to explore exporting vehicles to neighbouring right-hand-drive countries, leveraging Malaysia’s strategic location and robust automotive ecosystem.
Chery’s long-term vision he said, includes ensuring that local partners are content and engaged, creating significant job opportunities for Malaysians, and introducing new technologies to the local market.
These efforts, Zhang said would further strengthen the overall foundation of Chery’s operations in Malaysia, ensuring a high standard of quality and efficiency that will ultimately build lasting customer trust.
Chery’s RM1 billion Investment
In Nov 2023, Chery Malaysia pledged an investment of RM1 billion to support Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
This long-term commitment underscores the automotive brand’s confidence in Malaysia’s potential, bolstered by the country’s policies and dedication to fostering growth and innovation within the automotive sector.
On Tuesday (25 June), Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz shared on his social media account that Chery’s investment has begun to yield positive results.
In the video clip, Zafrul mentioned that with Chery’s new assembly plant in Shah Alam, 500 new jobs will be created, with the goal of increasing to at least 1,000 job opportunities. By partnering with local vendors and suppliers, Chery aimed to reduce component costs, effectively challenging the notion that local suppliers cannot meet international standards.
“With over 100 showroom and service centres across the country, Chery is able to offer even more job opportunities to the local community. This strategic investment will not only benefit Chery as a company but also the labour force in Malaysia,” Zafrul shared.

The partnership collaboration with the National Sports Council (MSN) was announced in an event attended by Datuk Stuart Ramalingam Chief Executive Officer Malaysian Football League and Coordinator of Road to Gold Programme, Yin Tongyue, Chairman of Chery Automobile Co.,Ltd and Zhang Guibing, President of Chery International.
